SCHOOL OF FRONTIER MISSIONS
SCHOOL OF FRONTIER MISSIONS
What if God wanted more than just a short-term missions trip?
We believe that God is sending people into the nations who have a burning heart for His presence and long to see the world encounter Him. Do you feel God stirring your heart to go further with Him in missions? To invest in a nation long-term?
Where will you go?
2024 SOFM will be run in Fiji in August – contact us for more details…or go ahead and apply here!
*DTS is a prerequisite for this school.
The School of Frontier Missions (SOFM) is designed to prepare you to go the distance.
During the three-month Training Phase you will:
- Gain more understanding about God’s heart for missions
- Learn about differing worldviews
- Understand the basics of language learning
- Learn about the challenges and benefits of living cross-culturally
- Know keys to plant multiplying churches
- Have skills to survive and thrive long term
Your extended outreach (normally two years) will either be with our Himalayas team or as part of a new pioneering team in East Asia or the Middle East (or another to another nation where you feel called a long-term call).
Where is God calling you to go?

It’s similar in format to a DTS. There will be a different speaker each week covering topics such as Cross-Cultural Communication, Church Planting, Language Acquisition, Self Care on the Field etc. There will also be regular times in our Furnace Prayer Room and Intercession times for Unreached Peoples. We will have experienced Missionaries sharing with us and you will be part of doing “simple church” each week. There will also be training in prayer support/ fundraising and of course some practical work duties !
Yes – you will be doing street/community Outreach a few hours each week seeking to connect with/disciple other nationalities living in NZ.
No, we ask you to prayerfully consider where the Lord may be calling you and we will pray/consult with you to discern where you are to go. It needs to be in a nation that has a different language from yours and has many unreached peoples (i.e. a “Frontier” location). We will also be wanting you to become part of an existing YWAM Frontiers team that is based there.
You will be given training and coaching during the lecture phase on raising up prayer and financial supporters for your Internship.
If you definitely know where you are going after the lecture phase then you could get your vaccinations prior to the lecture phase but this is not essential.
If you are not sure where you are going you will find out as part of your Research Project during the lecture phase what is required for your chosen nation and can get the required vaccinations in NZ.
If you know where you are going and don’t want to see your family at home prior to your Internship you could do this. In any case, you will need an onward or return ticket to enter NZ.
